Savor the Summer: Herbal Syrups & Spritzers

Adult Programs
A participant hold out a cup with red syrup and ice, seltzer is poured over top.

Celebrate and savor the delicate flavors of summer featuring delicious cooling mints and cheerful edible flowers. Local community herbalists Katherine Elmer and Kara Buchanan will provide delicious herbal “mocktails” featuring locally grown or wild-crafted medicinal plants, sparkling water, local honey, and edible flowers. There will be a brief introduction to herbal syrup making and the art and science of herbal mocktail blending for flavor and healing benefits. Add this skill to your toolkit for summer entertaining and celebrations!

Instructor: Jackie Bishop is an herbalist, educator and artist with a love for culinary crafting. She is constantly inspired by plants and the natural world in all of her makings, whether that be in her glass work (her primary art medium) or in her botanical beverages and plant-based cooking. She also holds an educator/director position at Davis Studio, South Burlington, and can occasionally be found mixing up drinks at a few local bars. As an educator, she enjoys sharing her varied skill sets in art, herbalism and crafting with others in a fun, simplified lesson giving the student room and encouragement to experiment and develop their own unique ideas!

Spoonful Herbals is the collaborative effort of community herbalists and educators Katherine Elmer and Kara Buchanan. Spoonful offers an annual Herbal CSA,  a six-month Community Herbalism Apprenticeship program, and a Herb Mobs program that engages volunteers to bring locally harvested (gleaned) medicinal plants into our apothecary from local organic farms and green spaces such as Shelburne Farms.
