Hi Alex, Thanks for your great question. Electric mowers are only really "clean" if the source of the electricity itself is clean. So if you buy an electric mower and your electricity comes from a coal-fired power plant, you're not gaining much. (You're still gaining a little because power plants are more efficient at producing energy than your average lawn mower engine, and they have more pollution protections.) In our case, over 70% of the electricity needs of the Farm are from solar power, and that should climb to nearly 100% soon because we've contracted to buy electricity from a solar array at Shelburne Museum, which should come online in August. For us, we feel that our decision to purchase electric mowers make good climate sense.
